What are the adoption requirements?
To adopt from VMAS, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old and present valid government-issued identification.
- Confirm that pets are permitted where you live.
- Be prepared to provide a safe, loving, and permanent home.
How does the adoption process work?
- Browse available pets. Review our online profiles to see who is currently looking for a home.
- Submit an application. Open the pet's profile and complete the adoption application.
- Meet your match. After the application is reviewed, we will arrange a visit with the pet.
- Welcome them home. Once approved and the pet is ready, complete the adoption agreement and pay the applicable fee.
Applications are generally reviewed within 48 hours. Weekends, holidays, severe weather, and animal emergencies may cause delays.
Are there adoption fees, and what do they cover?
Yes. Adoption fees help support medical care, food, housing, vaccinations, spay or neuter surgery, and microchipping. The current fee schedule and available discounts will be posted here soon.
Can I bring my current pet to meet an available pet?
We strongly encourage supervised introductions between resident dogs and dogs being considered for adoption. Our staff can help facilitate the meeting and discuss common adjustment concerns.
Because travel and unfamiliar environments can be stressful for cats, we generally do not recommend bringing a resident cat to the location. Slow, controlled introductions at home are usually more successful, and our staff can provide guidance.
Can I foster a pet before deciding whether to adopt?
Fostering is intended to help animals with specific medical, behavioral, age-related, or stress-related needs. It is not a trial adoption program. Foster placements are selected according to the needs of animals under our care.
What happens if a former owner comes forward after an adoption?
Information about required holding periods and ownership procedures is being finalized and will be added after municipal review.
Lost, Found & Surrendered Pets
Steps that can help animals return home safely.
What should I do if I have lost my pet?
- Check VMAS lost-and-found listings and our social media pages regularly.
- File a lost-pet report and contact other nearby shelters.
- Visit the shelter with a recent photograph and proof of ownership.
- Ask the microchip company to flag your pet as missing and confirm your contact information.
- Share a clear post on local social media and neighborhood platforms.
Be cautious of anyone requesting money or verification codes in exchange for returning your pet.
What should I do if I find a stray pet?
If it is safe, check for a collar or identification tag. You may contact the listed owner directly if you are comfortable doing so. Otherwise, contact the animal control agency responsible for the location where the animal was found.
If you are unsure which agency to contact, your local police department can identify the appropriate animal control provider. Found pets may also be brought to VMAS during operating hours for a free microchip scan.
I can no longer keep my pet. How do I surrender them?
We understand that circumstances change. VMAS is an open-intake municipal service with limited space and generally cannot accept owner-surrendered pets.
Contact a local SPCA, humane society, or breed-specific rescue for assistance. If you have exhausted those resources, contact VMAS to discuss possible options, available resources, or intake availability.

Fostering & Volunteering
Help an animal thrive while supporting our team.
What is fostering, and which animals need foster homes?
Foster homes may be needed for animals recovering from medical treatment, very young animals, pets experiencing shelter stress, or animals that need additional behavioral support.
How can I foster an animal?
- Complete the VMAS foster application.
- Attend the required orientation or training.
- Work with our team to be matched with an animal that needs foster care.
